Big Apple Donuts & Coffee

The very first Big Apple Donuts & Coffee was open in AEON Seberang Perai City on the 22nd August 2008. From what I heard and read, the queue for the Big Apple Donuts was shocking over the weekends. Some even waited for more than 1 hour just to get the donuts!

I went to AEON Seberang Perai City after one month of the opening. It was a weekday. When I walked passed the Big Apple Donuts & Coffee, to my surprise, there was no one queuing! Don’t believe? See it yourself.

Now you believe? Hehe. I didn’t get the donuts immediately since I just reached and wanted to walked around first. It will be troublesome for me to bring a box of donuts and walked around. I decided to buy them when I was heading home.

There are many varieties of donuts for you to choose from.

I ordered a box of 12, which costs me RM21. One donut is selling at RM2.20. For 6 pieces, it was at RM11.50.

From the 12 donuts (starting from the top left), I got myself a 101 Dalmatian, Kiwi Blitz, Iceberg, Chocoring, 2 Pink Panther (give one to my cousin), The Alien (Cool name! But it doesn’t look like an alien to me), Green Teaser, Duren Duren, Whitnut, Chocoholic and Mango Tango.

If you happened to buy the Duren Duren, the maximum time before it goes into your stomach is 3 hours, since it was prepared by using fresh durian. For all the durian lovers, try this out. The durian taste was just superb.

Overall, all the donuts are delicious, no matter which flavor you choose. Now, for all the Penangites who reside in Penang Island, you no longer need to go to Seberang Perai City just to get the Big Apple Donuts. The Big Apple Donuts & Coffee has opened another branch in Gurney plaza on last Friday, 26 September 2008.

  1. Hehehe…it’s finally here, isn’t it?:D
I saw their outlet in Gurney Plaza too, at the Lower Ground floor, standing in the place which used to belong to Pastasia;)

  2. wa lai liao 🙂 🙂
i knew they’re quite well known…whether it’s really that nice, have to try it out then…

  3. Christy,
Ya, finally in Gurney Plaza, nearer to us! Hehe. I never check out the outlet in Gurney Plaza yet.

    New Kid On The Blog,
Good question, but I don’t have the answer. Haha. Need to ask Pastasia then. Maybe the business for Pastasia was not that good, so they closed it. Just my guess.

    Tsp,
Finally you are here! The donuts are real soft! Very nice to be bitten. 🙂

  4. Big Apple and J.Co are two rivals in the donut world…
LEt me choose either one, ermmm… I would say “no” to both of them!
    Donuts are darn unhealthy!!! Hhahahaa…

  5. Mei Wah,
Haha, not everyday eat mar, still OK la. This time is my second time only, the first time is in S’pore last year, forgot the brand of the donuts.

  6. when Big Apple initially started business in Ipoh’s Kinta City, the queue was stretching til neverland.
lately? hahaha … you can pick all the doughnuts you want within minutes. albeit not-so-fresh-from-the-oven!

  7. J2Kfm,
Is like that. New things all people kia su. When it becomes old, no one wants it anymore. 🙂

    vkeong,
Yes lo, really no one buying leh! But when I went back for the second time, I need to queue up and waited for 3 persons in front of me before I can get the donuts. Still, it is considered fast! 🙂

  8. I think the crowd here in Penang are very differece from KL. Back in KL every second also queue up like they are giving for free. In Penang, week day is smashing flies day. For myself, I had tried once but I ain’t going for more. May be it’s not a necessity for me. How many times have you been there? Not sure how long will this Big Apple survive in Penang?

  9. Donut craze over there too ya 🙂 The long queue we saw is always at the Donut Factory & J.Co, see if this Big Apple invade Singapore 🙂

  10. i like the Witnut & Chocoreo.
Btw, thanks for treating me the donuts!! Yummy…yummy…

  11. Steven,
I saw Big Apple in KK, Sabah during my last visit on June. Not crowded at all. For the Seberang Perai City, I only went once. For the outlet in Gurney Plaza, I never see it yet. I have no idea how long they can last.

    shionge,
I tried the very first “fancy” donut in Singapore. This is only the second time I tried these kind of donuts. I will not buy it often since it was not that cheap. To me, it was quite expensive. Haha.

  12. Cariso,
Ya, weekday is the best day to go to shopping mall!

    ivyQ,
You are welcome. 🙂 Treat you again next time! Hehe.

  13. i’ve not tried this. there are so many Japanese Donuts around eat until sien already but if its really good then must try. Donut Factory in Suntec still has queues so long after so long other shops no more queues. i saw the queue just on wednesday nia.

  14. I 1st time tried it was at Kl end of June, I tried both Big Appl and J Co., I really like Big Apple duren duren but for overall I prefer J Co. but honestly the taste all very sweet, once a while ok. I not yet try Penang.

  15. Constance,
Wow, still have queue in Singapore? I need to see it myself when I get there again. 🙂

    Kikey,
Quite sweet. Haha, ya ya, no need to see, ignore will do.

    JL,
Agree with you, once in a while is OK.

  16. At last, Penangites get to buy the donuts easily in this new outlet. Surprisingly no queue as compare to the outlet in Jusco Seberang…

  17. weii.. u bought 12?
    didn’t give one to me.

    my durian one spoilt…..
i mean my sis took home from lunch……………………..
and we had to throw that away. 🙁
else the next day, we’d be machine guns.

I guess pastasia is GONE for good.
even the one in queensbay mall closed down.

  19. You are are quite right about guessing how long BA is going to survive in Penang. I had that in my mind too. There are so many delicious food in Penang which of course are cheaper and more filling than gobbling down so many sweet donuts at a time. Luckily, BA’s donuts are not as sweet as J.Co too or else I don’t think I would be able to take in so many. 😛

Can you still remember those days when many of the fast food restaurants such as Mary Brown Chicken, A&W, Fish & Co, Kenny Rogers? Well, the barely survived in Penang. Ever wonder why? In Penang, you need to be extremely good in order to survive in the food industry. This is just my two sens thought. 😛

  20. CK,
After the outlet open in Gurney, I not yet go there. I am not sure about the queue. I think people cannot afford to everyday eat donuts! Haha.

    Mei Yi,
Ya, I bought 12, for the very first time. Just want to try them out. Once tried, maybe I will have them again in few months time.

  21. Criz,
Agree with you. Penang has so many delicious food. Who in the world will eat the donuts everyday or even every week? 🙂

Ya, of course I remember. I still remember A&W was located at the ground floor of Super Komtar. I went to buy the root beer with my sister A&W student card. Haha. There was one fast food restaurant beside the McDonalds in Komtar. I forgot the name. Do you remember?

  22. sweetiepie,
Yes, your friend is correct. I bought the durian donut too. It was the one at bottom left. You need to eat within 3 hours after you bought it to keep its freshness.
