Ivy’s Kitchen @ Penang Chow Thye Road

Posted on by

Another food review arranged by Criz. Our destination for the review was Ivy’s Kitchen, located at 54 Chow Thye Road. Last month, there was a lunch review in Ivy’s Kitchen as well. I never attended but I have read the reviews by our food bloggers. This time, 6 of us were invited to try out the dinner instead.

A big banner is hang on top of the entrance. As you can see, Ivy’s Kitchen offers Steam Boat Dinner, Seafood Dinner and Fish Head Curry. Of course, these 3 are only some of the dishes among others.

img_1333

You can choose to sit outside or inside with air conditioning. It’s your decision. However, order and payment need to be done inside.

Table setting inside the restaurant.

We suppose to order our own drink. Since we have no idea on what to choose, Mr Tan decided to give us different colors of drink, for the photo taking purposes. 🙂 First, it comes with 5 colorful drinks.

img_1354

Then, add in another one, become 6. But we have 7!

img_1357

Here comes another one, to make it 7. All the 7 drinks are: Honeydew, Watermelon, Apple with Lime, Cucumber Mint, Carrot with Milk, Orange and Ambala Sour Plum. Each drink costs RM2.20. According to NKOTB who has the Apple with Lime, the lime is too strong against the apple. For Cucumber Mint, Waco said it tasted like cucumber. Hmmmmm, of course it tasted like cucumber, if not, it tasted like banana? LOL.

img_1359

Our first dish of the night, Sweet and Sour Flower Crab. The gravy is very good. However, I never feel the sourness. Besides, I like it to be more spicy. Mr Tan explained, if it is too spicy, children are not able to take it. All the dishes are meant for whole family. This has cleared all the doubts. We suggested to have the level of spiciness:  mild, moderate and super spicy for customers to choose their desired level. Sounds great right? This dish will become perfect if Fried Man Tou is provided, to dip it with the gravy. Slurp…….

The charges for Sweet and Sour Flower Crab is RM30 per 600g. By looking and the photo below, can you guess how much we have eaten? Honestly, I have no idea. If you want to know, ask Mr Tan or Ms Ivy. Maybe, you can get a free treat from Mr Tan by guessing it right. I said, MAYBE.

img_1379

Joo Hoo Char – RM10. This dish is very common. You can find it in most of the Nyonya restaurant. I just like it.

img_1395

Whose hand? This one is pretty easy to guess. It is nice to have the Joo Hoo Char with the vege.

img_1409

Lobak is the next. If Mr Tan never mentioned the meat was chicken, I did not notice also. I just eat. To me, it is just normal. I still prefer the one my mum made. Haha. RM6 for this plate of Lobak.

img_1398

Here comes the Asam Prawn. The size of the prawn is small, if compare to other restaurant. But with the price of RM4-RM5, it’s worth it! I like this Asam Prawn. YUMMY!

img_1416

Sambal Kai Lan. It has 3 categories: Small (RM8), Medium (RM10) and Large (RM14). If you dine in Ivy’s Kitchen, don’t forget to order this dish with more sambal or more spicy. The sambal is just fantastic.

img_1427

Fish Curry or in Malay, Gulai Tumis Ikan. Black Promfret was being used in this curry. The curry is sour. Spicy wise, it is OK for me. The price is charged according to the weight of the fish. RM10 per 100g. Again, how much is the fish curry below costs? Same answer from me, ask Mr Tan.

img_1442

Tofu Seaweed Soup – Small (RM8), Medium (RM10) and Large (RM14). It is a very normal soup. Nothing special.

img_1469

Additional dish: Beef Rendang, courtesy of Mr Tan. The gravy was superb. However, the beef was not tender enough. Besides, maybe the beef can be replaced by chicken or pork, since some people don’t eat beef.

img_1452

Red Bean Longan – RM2 per bowl.

img_1471

It is full of red bean, sago and longan, worth the price.

img_1488

Overall, I was very full after this dinner. All dishes are delicious and great, especially Sweet and Sour Flower Crab, Asam Prawn, Sambal Kai Lan and Beef Rendang. If you cannot think of a place to go for your dinner, try Ivy’s Kitchen out. It’s simply delicious and yummy!

  1. Speaking from the perspective of having read widely on the topic this site offers something distinct, and a look at premiumgoodscorner reinforced that distinctness, the rare site that contributes something genuinely original to a saturated topic is the rare site worth following carefully and this one has demonstrated that original contribution capability today.

  2. Skipped to a specific section because I knew that was the question I had, and the answer was clean, and a stop at prismoakcollective similarly delivered targeted answers without burying them, content engineered for readers who arrive with specific needs rather than open ended browsing is increasingly valuable in a search heavy reading environment.

  6. Bookmark added in three places to make sure I do not lose the link, and a look at frostpinecollective got the same redundant treatment, sites I am afraid to lose are the rare keepers and this is clearly one of them based on what I have read so far across this and a couple of related posts.

  7. Taking the time to read carefully here has been worthwhile for the past hour, and a look at blossomhavenmarket extended the worthwhile reading, the calculation of return on reading time spent is something I do informally and this site has been producing positive returns across multiple sessions during the last week of regular visits and reads.

  9. Well structured and easy to read, that combination is rarer than people think, and a stop at goldenfernmarket confirmed the same standard runs across the rest of the site, definitely the kind of place I will be coming back to when this topic comes up in conversation later again over the weeks ahead.

  10. Now noticing that the post benefited from being neither too short nor too long for its content, and a look at cloudridgegoods continued that calibration of length, sites that match length to content rather than padding to hit some target are sites that respect both their material and their readers and this site does both.

  11. A piece that reads like it was written for me without claiming to be written for me, and a look at radiantshorestore produced the same fit, when the writer audience match clicks naturally without being engineered through demographic targeting you know the writing is solid and this site has that natural fit consistently for me.

  13. Liked the way the post got out of its own way, and a stop at amberlighthousegoods extended that invisible craft, the best writing you barely notice while reading because it is doing its work without drawing attention to itself and this site has clearly mastered that disappearing act across the pieces I have read.

  14. Now adjusting my expectations upward for the topic based on this post, and a stop at rapidtrendzone continued that bar raising effect, content that resets what I think is possible on a subject is doing real work in shaping my standards and this site is providing those bar raising experiences at a notable rate during sessions.

  18. However casually I came to this site I have ended up reading carefully, and a look at echoferncollective continued earning that careful reading, the conversion from casual visitor to careful reader is something content earns rather than demands and this site has accomplished that conversion for me over the course of just a few pieces.

  20. Felt the post had been written without using a single buzzword, and a look at amberridgegoods continued that clean vocabulary, content free of jargon and trendy phrases reads better and ages better and this site has clearly committed to a vocabulary that will not feel dated in three years which is impressive editorially.

  21. Picked this up while looking for something else and ended up reading every paragraph because it was actually informative, and after echopetalbazaar I was sure I would come back, that does not happen often when most sites bury the useful parts under endless ads and pop ups today and across most categories online.

  24. Appreciated that the writer trusted the reader to follow along without constant restating of earlier points, and a look at urbantrendzone continued that respect for the reader, treating an audience as capable adults rather than as people to be hand held through every paragraph is something I notice and value highly across the open internet today.

  29. Bookmark earned, share earned, return visit earned, all from one reading session, and a look at urbantrendarena did the same, the trifecta of bookmark and share and return is rare in a single visit and represents the highest level of engagement I tend to offer any piece of online content these days here.

  32. Reading this triggered a small change in how I think about the topic going forward, and a stop at glowforgeessentials reinforced that subtle shift, the rare content that actually moves my thinking rather than just confirming or filling it is the kind I most value and this site is providing that kind of impact today.

  33. Taking the time to read carefully here has been worthwhile for the past hour, and a look at blossomhorizonstore extended the worthwhile reading, the calculation of return on reading time spent is something I do informally and this site has been producing positive returns across multiple sessions during the last week of regular visits and reads.

  38. More substantial than most of what I find searching for this topic online, and a stop at blossombaycollective kept that quality consistent, this is one of those sites where the writing actually rewards careful reading rather than punishing the patient reader with empty filler stretched out across long paragraphs that say very little.

  39. Taking the time to read carefully here has been worthwhile for the past hour, and a look at modernoutfitstore extended the worthwhile reading, the calculation of return on reading time spent is something I do informally and this site has been producing positive returns across multiple sessions during the last week of regular visits and reads.

  43. Reading this with a notebook open turned out to be the right move, and a stop at digitalpickmarket added more material to the notes, content that justifies active note taking from a passive reader is content with real informational density and this site is producing notes worthy material at a high rate consistently.

  44. A piece that exhibited the kind of patience that good writing requires, and a look at digitaldealcorner continued that patient quality, hurried writing is easy to spot and this site reads as having been written without time pressure which produces a different feel than the rushed content that dominates much of the modern blog space.

  45. Looking through the archives suggests this site has been doing this for a while at this level, and a look at echopinecollective confirmed the long term consistency, sites that have maintained quality across years rather than just a recent stretch are sites with serious editorial discipline and this one has clearly been at it for a while.

  48. Quietly enjoying that I have found a new site to follow for the topic, and a look at digitaldealzone reinforced the small pleasure of the find, the discovery of new high quality sources is one of the more durable pleasures of careful internet reading and this site has been generating that discovery pleasure at multiple points already today.

  49. Thank you for keeping the writing honest and the points easy to verify against your own experience, and a stop at echohollowmarket reflected the same approach, no exaggeration just steady useful content that I can take with me into my own work without second guessing every sentence I happen to read here.

  50. Now recognising the post as a rare example of careful writing on a topic that mostly receives careless treatment, and a stop at velvetoakcollective extended that contrast with the average elsewhere, content that highlights how much the average is settling for low quality is content that has both internal merit and external value as a benchmark.
